For this personal project, I wanted to create an ode to French desserts through a visual style inspired by Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antionette.
Growing up, I was always fascinated by the many cookbooks that filled my mom’s kitchen. They came in a variety of shapes and sizes with pastel colour palettes and different types of binding styles. But they all shared one thing in common: the vivid imagery that accompanied the recipes I knew I would never attempt, but loved for how beautiful they looked. This cookbook is designed with those vintage cookbooks in mind.
Designing Let Them Eat Cake meant making maximalism work while presenting a lot of information, like recipes. The challenge was to make each spread feel full, without overwhelming the content or the viewer.
➝ Capture the tone and visuals of Marie Antoinette through a cohesive design language, reinterpreted as a cookbook
➝ Blend nostalgic cookbook aesthetics with contemporary design
➝ Create a visual experience that’s as excessive as the desserts themselves
I was resposible for art direction, layout design, and type pairing. I sourced all the visual elements and used a collage style to keep things visually engaging. I made sure every page was fun to look at and just the right amount of over-the-top.
